The 2010 qualifying season kicked off last weekend in Elizabeth City, NC. Serious MX riders Matthew Burkeen, Ryan Zimmer, Justin Dunn and Josh Strickland were in attendance and all qualified well.
Zimmer had the battles of the weekend with James Stewart's little brother Malcolm. Z-man fought tooth and nail in all of the pro class motos but came up just short to the lightning fast Stewart who was sporting new Yamahas with some of the trickest components available. A hard pass attempt left both on the ground in one of the early motos on Saturday but both riders put on a show in all of the following motos. The highlight of the weekend was the final 250 Pro Sport moto. Ryan had the holeshot with Stewart close behind. It stayed that way for 5 laps and on the final lap Zimmer pulled out a slight lead to take a well deserved moto win. Zimmer, a much improved second year A rider, should be a force in the amateur A ranks this year before moving on to Supercross in 2011.
Ten year old Justin Dunn led a very strong field of 85cc 9-11 riders in the stock class on Saturday taking the overall win ahead of RRPS rider Tristan Charboneau. Sundays mod class would see Dunn in the second spot with Charboneau, one of the top 11 year olds in the country, taking the win.
Josh Strickland fought an unfamiliar bike and a lack of riding time due to the wet weather to squeak by in the 8th and final qualifying spot riding a Serious MX, Triangle Cycles backed KTM.
Matt Burkeen capitalized on great starts to finish second to Cooper Webb in Supermini and a safe fifth in the 85cc stock class. Sunday saw Burkeen again run second to Webb in Supermini and finish again in fifth against a strong field in the 85cc 12-14 modified class.
